    African American
  • Adinkra symbols - Symbols common in Western African societies. Adapted by the Asante people of Ghana, the symbols represent different concepts or ideas. Adinkra are used on fabric, walls, in pottery and logos.
  • Agbada - The Yoruban name for a flowing wide sleeved robe worn in most of West Africa. It is known by various names, depending on the ethnic group wearing it.
  • Bubah - An elegant four piece ensemble that includes a long outer wrap and matching headpiece worn in traditional African weddings.
  • Cowrie shell - This shell comes from a marine snail found mostly in tropical regions. The shell is smooth and somewhat egg-shaped, with a long, narrow, slit-like opening. They are often worn as jewelry or used as charms because they are viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth.
  • Kente - A handwoven African fabric that comes in more than three hundred designs, colors and patterns. Made of cotton, silk, or rayon yarn, Kente was developed by the Asante people of Ghana. It dates back over three thousand years.
  • Yoruba - A large ethnic group in Africa; they constitute approximately 21% of Nigeria's total population.

  • Cheung Sam - A dress with a high collar.

    Greek
  • Diples - Fried pastries made of honey and nuts often displayed on the same table with the wedding cake.
  • Dolmathes - Greek appetizer of grapes leaves stuffed with rice, dill, and mint.
  • Kalamatiano - Traditional handkerchief dance.
  • Kapama - Dish of lamb simmered in onions and tomatoes with cinnamon and savory flavors.
  • Koufeta - White chocolate covered almonds, symbolizing the bitterness and sweetness in life, passed as favors for wedding guests always in odd numbered groups to bring guests good luck. Usually in white tulle with sky blue ribbon to represent colors of the Greek flag.
  • Koumbaros or Kumbada - Traditionally the groom's godfather. Acts as a sponsor and instigates the actions of the ceremony like the crowns exchange and the procession around the wedding platform. Similar role of the Western culture's Best Man.
  • Moussaka - An eggplant and potato layered dish with béchamel sauce.
  • Spanakopita - A spinach and egg pie with a filo crust.
  • Spetsiota - A baked fish dish with garlic, tomatoes, and lemons.
  • Stefana - Crowns used in the wedding ceremony made traditionally from orange blossoms, twigs and vines wrapped in silver and gold and attached by a long ribbon. Symbols of the bride and groom as King and Queen.

    Italian
  • Confetti - Candy-coated almonds (similar to Jordan almonds) commonly given as favors during Italian weddings. Also, the term for tiny pieces of paper thrown in celebration.
  • Farfallette Dolci - "Sweet butterflies" -- an Italian cookie made from little knots of fried dough dusted with sugar.

    Japanese
  • Furisode - A kimono with wide sleeves that the bride will change into towards the end of the reception.
  • Hikidemono - Japanese wedding favors.
  • Irouchiakake - A beautiful red, gold, silver, and white silk kimono that the bride will change into after the wedding.
  • Kekkon Hiroen - Formal Wedding Reception.
  • Origami - The Japanese art of paper folding.
  • San-san-kudo - The sharing of sake; considered the heart of the Japanese wedding ceremony.
  • Shinto - The name given to the religious beliefs and social customs indigenous to Japan.
  • Shiromuku - A formal gown still used today as traditional bridal dresses.

  • Klezmer - Traditional Yiddish celebratory music.
  • Kosher - Food that meets Jewish dietary restrictions.
  • Mazel Tov - Exclamation meaning, "Good Luck!"
  • Sheva Brachot - Seven marriage blessings recited under the chuppah.
  • Simcha - Celebration of joy.
  • Tallis - Prayer shawl.
  • Torah - First five books of the Hebrew Bible.
  • Yihud - Brief seclusion of bride and groom immediately following wedding ceremony.
